Epsom salt bath on steroids with a specific gravity denser than the Dead Sea. Scientifically known as magnesium sulfate, Epsom salt baths have been used for generations for relaxation and muscle soreness. Many in the float therapy industry piggyback its benefit claims with those of the magnesium sulfate. When you soak in a bath of dissolved salts, your body absorbs the magnesium, which in turn helps relieve muscle cramping and improve function, as well as soothe pain and promote relaxation.
Aquatic Therapy
“Aquatic therapy is a mainstay of physical therapy, and we all know our joints feel better in water when we are weightless,” says sports medicine specialist John-Paul H. Rue, M.D., of Orthopedics and Joint Replacement at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, noting that dark, relaxing environment also encourages quieting your mind.“I think the bottom line is that getting adequate recovery time is key for performance,” he says. “This is another modality that may improve recovery, both mentally and physically, for endurance athletes.” Which is exactly what we found. There are many ways to destress and recover and some work better than others depending on who you are and what you like. If you’re chronically stressed and/or feel like you need more recovery tools, it’s totally worth trying a float.
Flotation Therapy
Float therapy is a powerful tool for wellness, relaxation, pain relief and better sleep. As with any therapy, with regular use its benefits are enhanced. Stress, tension and pain have formed over time and will take some time to experience the greatest relief—luckily, floating is a relaxing, fun,and effortless way to do so! Float therapy offers relief and benefits which are cumulative—they build on themselves with each subsequent session. We like to say “the more you float, the better it gets”, as floats themselves deepen beyond the first session. Though flotation is an “effortless” therapy, the body and mind actually learn how to relax into the float with each session.
Isolation Tank Therapy
Another common term is isolation tank therapy. This term refers, of course, to the isolation tank that is used during floating. While there’s absolutely nothing incorrect about using the term isolation tank therapy, it does tend to put the emphasis on the tool of the tank itself, rather than the sensation of floating and the inner workings of the mind and body that take place within.
REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy)
Throughout the 1960s and 70s, reputable academic research continued into the positive effects of sensory deprivation techniques, including stress relief and enhanced memory and learning. A few of the emerging leaders in the field, including Dr. Peter Suedfeld and Dr. R.A. Borrie, coined the term REST around 1980 to, in Dr. Suedfeld’s own words, “replace the inaccurate and somewhat scary term sensory deprivation.”REST stands for Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy, and there are two primary categories: lying on a bed in a dark, soundproof room, or floating in saltwater within a dark, soundproof chamber—what we commonly refer to as floating. To this day, when floatation therapy is discussed in academic publications, it’s most commonly referred to as “floatation REST”.
Relieve Muscle Cramping and Improve Function

When you soak in a bath of dissolved salts, your body absorbs the magnesium, which in turn helps relieve muscle cramping and improve function, as well as soothe pain and promote relaxation.
Sensory Deprivation
Neuroscientist John C. Lilly is credited with first experimenting with early floatation therapy as part of his pursuit to study consciousness and the self. At the time, the technique was just one specific branch of a larger field referred to as sensory deprivation. While technically accurate, few members of the float community use the term today…mostly because of its loose association with nefarious military interrogations and the 1980 sci-fi/horror film “Altered States”, which depicts a primitive kind of floating as a nightmarish experience.
Soothe Pain and Promote Relaxation
The actual relaxation benefits are more likely to come from the combined impact of the water and weightlessness. The salt changes the quality of the water, making it feel silky and slippery. Warmth is a known muscle relaxant, and being free from gravity helps your muscles fully relax. In that regard, there is some decent research. A study in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research found that exercisers who had fried their quads and hamstrings with heavy workouts on leg machines had significantly lower blood lactate levels following a 60-minute float REST session than their peers who relaxed sans float tank. The floaters also reported less pain.
Speed Recovery
New England Patriot’s quarterback Tom Brady, 40, has a float tank in his house. The five-time Super Bowl-winning football team incorporated floatation therapy or restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST) into its training and recovery protocol in 2014 and now have two tanks to help the athletes relax, recover, and get game ready at their Gillette Stadium facilities. Other NFL players and professional athletes from all fields of sport including cycling, tennis, soccer, and running have also fallen for floating. It’s no surprise that pro athletes have access to the latest recovery techniques, but it begs the question: Should you try floatation therapy too?

Went for a first time float although I was a little skeptical, and I’m incredibly happy I did! Like nothing I’ve ever felt before, just complete relaxation of body and mind. You have to allow yourself to completely relax in the pod with water over your ears (earplugs provided if needed) to fully start to feel the effects in my opinion. It’s hard to explain, but great to experience if that makes sense. The ambiance of the spa was soothing and inviting, and being underground was a neat niche, but also practical, due to noise cancelation of the downtown area. They had great reading material and calm activities you could do in the serenity(?) room. I would highly recommend this experience and we will be returning. They were extremely friendly and informational and answered the questions we had. Fantastic

I floated for the first time ever at Buoy today and had such a great experience. There was a short delay around my appointment time so I started late, but Chad very thoughtfully gave me a complementary steam shower which more than made up for it (and didn’t rush me in any way so it was all still really chill).

This was my first time using a float spa. I did a one hour float with a half hour steam shower. I used the 2 person ocean room. In the future I think I would use a solo pod because my body that was out of the water was a bit chilly (I run cold). The water is warm not hot. You are taken care of from entry to exit. The products smelled lovely. My body feels like jello. A truly indescribable experience.

This experience is amazing. It’s like you forget your body even exists for an hour because you are so relaxed. The atmosphere is relaxing and pleasant and the float is like escaping the world for an hour plus. When it’s over I leave feeling like a different(better) person. The facility is well maintained and the private rooms are very clean. I highly recommend everyone give it a try.

This was my first time floating and it was a really great experience at Buoy Underground! I had a heard about floating through a high school friend and wanted to give it a shot. Staff was great giving me an overview for my first time. They made the experience a memorable one and I plan to come back again. Highly recommend!

Today was my first float at Buoy Underground! I’ve been intending to experience this for many years, so it was especially satisfying. The facility is fantastic and the staff have covered all of your needs in order to guarantee a rejuvenating float. I found floating to be everything that I had imagined, and so much more. I’m planning to return regularly and treat myself to the serenity that can’t be adequately described, it must be experienced.

I was always curious about Float therapy, and was nervous to try, but everyone there was so helpful and made me feel comfortable. After the float, I also had a 90-minute massage which was amazing. The spa itself was a very nice space too, with a relaxation room, renew room, tea station, etc. They even gave a little welcome present on my way out, which really makes you want to go back.

I received a float as a Christmas gift, and will definitely be floating here again. Everything was a 10/10. The service and explanation of everything from the start to the end was great. The float itself was so relaxing, and even after some anxiety as this was my first time, I was able to relax. Will be recommending this to all my friends and family members!

This was my second time floating as well as my sons. My son is an athlete, and works out, or has practice 5 to 7 days a week. The mental and physical benefits are priceless!! It’s not often teenagers take a break from everything and relax. Floating has shown to be a great way for him to mentally disconnect, recharge, as well as help rejuvenate his muscles. We can’t wait to schedule our third float!
