Went in Tom’s Barbershop this morning 5/12/22 around 9:15 am to see if I could get an edge and a taper before work. As I went up the stairs I saw the barber (I was later told his name is Tom – the owner) giving me the oddest look. When I entered the building I explained, “don’t be startled I am coming to see if I can get a taper and an edge”. The barber responds “No, you can’t get service”. There was 1 customer in the chair that I could not tell if person was a man or woman. I asked, “why am I not able to be serviced because I want same cut as your current customer?” The barber response is that he doesn’t service women, he don’t even cut his sister’s hair. I explained to him that this is 2022 and his action appears to be very discriminating because my money spends just as a man does. His response was that he don’t need my money. I left very disturbed by his comment and was not able to have my haircut before work. From his actions it appears that he was disturbed that I am a black woman. Is this legal?

I’ve been going to Tom’s Barber Shop for over 20 years. I only have a one style cut. I’m normally only in his shop for 20 minutes. Seeing that I work in Dayton, Oh, Tom always make a special effort for me to come in early, so I can be out the door and headed to work. As with any barber, Tom too has a following of regulars customers.
