I have thick, long, coarse 4C hair and I do not let just anybody play in my hair. I have been searching for years for someone who knows how to handle my hair type. Someone who looks like me, and is a licensed, expert hairstylist who knows better than to use a fine tooth comb in my strands. I was in desperate, with a capital D, need of a trim. My ends were hanging on for dear life, and some had already left the building. Jen, the proprietor of The Natural Hair Studio, hooked me up. I had a wash, condition, blowout, trim, half braids and half twist hairstyle. I don’t usually put any heat to my hair but some heat is necessary for a good trim if you have tightly coiled hair. The shop intern washed my hair with vigor. If I can’t feel 10 fingertips on my scalp, you’re wasting my time. I felt all 10 so my time wasn’t wasted. The hair products smelled Black girl magic good, like coconut, peppermint, mangoes, etc. The shop was clean and the wait time was within the expected range. If you’re a Black woman who regularly gets her hair done, you know we spend hours in the salon and there is always wait time after the conditioner comes out. It took Jen a couple of hours to do my hair because I wanted twists with braids. Jen does smaller twists so they’ll keep longer, which in turn takes longer to do. The price for the services were in line with other licensed shops. The list price is on the web so there are no surprises. Be forewarned, parking is horrible around the shop. It’s an industrial/multi-unit residential area. You better be adept at parallel parking in miniature spaces or be prepared to foot it from a few blocks over. My parallel parking game is -0 so I had to walk over a few blocks. I was overall satisfied with my experience and Jen is good people. It was worth the drive.

This was my first visit and I drove an hour to get my hair done. I was hyped by the IG promo. First anyone going here should know parking is very limited in this area. I arrived at my appointment time of 10am. The tv was blasting so the the owner had to literally yell to me. The owner was doing someone’s hairwhen I arrived at my appointment time. The shampoo girl on the phone waves me over to sit in her chair. No greeting, no consult nothing. After getting my hair washed and blown out I’m left sitting and waiting an hour before I get my hair braided. 2 more customers come in. Mind you there’s only the one stylist. I do not understand for the life of me why people overbook appointments. It shows a lack of respect for your client’s time. Anyway I’m asked to wait in another seat while they started another person hair. Finally I finish 5 hours later. While getting my hair done there was a conversation between the stylists about sexultiy and the owner stops mid conversation and asks me if I’m transgendered because she dont want to offend me. I’m not but that alone is offensive. That was not a conversation for the Hair Salon. But thankfully they had since enough to end the conversation when a young child came in. I was charged $165 for this experience. A simple cornrow style on my natural shoulder length straight hair is rediculous. I will say the outcome was neat and it did come out nice. However there’s a culture of over charging and poor customer service in African American salons and thus why they don’t retain customers. Because even though she is talented I would never return because of the poor customer service experience.

New Client: My appointment was 6/9 at 11am with Shanice. My experience was a 10! My only downfall is not the salon but the parking: which is out of their control… Nevertheless: my experience was very educational: because unlike some shops that work on natural hair: this shop specializes in just natural hair and could answer all of my hair care questions. After 20 years of growing my dreadlocks and combing them out it was a pleasure being educated by Shanice and Jenn.. Thank goodness I came in when I did: or else I might have become damn near baldheaded with my non-expertise with natural hair..Lol

Yesterday was my first time at this hair salon. I got a wash, protein treatment and two strand twist. Jennifer even greased my scalp. I’ve been to many hair salon and never got my scalp greased. The greased felt good on my scalp. Anyways, the service I received was great. They were gentle with my natural hair which goes a long way. Most people aren’t gentle with natural hair. I am pleased with the services I received, and I will be going back next month. I am a satisfied customer.

My family loves getting our hair done here. Jennifer is so talented. My nieces say that they love their hair everyday, all day. I love getting my hair done by both Shaniece & Jennifer. They specialize in the care of the hair. Excellent trims. I always get compliments on my hair after a visit. Highly recommended! Safety is also a priority.

After trying two other places for this style and they were booked for months, I was happy when I got a call back with an appointment in time for my upcoming end of summer events. I went back again after going to another stylist at another shop for a wedding style. (The other shop left me with scabs and a bald spot, extremely tender scalp). My hair definitely was not deep-conditioned, just a regular washout conditioner left in for a minute or so. I’m going to assume I was not changed for a deep condition. Perhaps, I was not booked for one in the first place; as I requested over the phone. My trim was more on the cut side, same as it was the first time I had my hair done by her a few months earlier. My flat iron job was awful. I could tell it was not great before leaving the shop, but I was just so ready to go! My hair was wrapped prior to leaving the shop. When she was wrapping it my hair had very little bounce and was sort of stiff and heavy. When I got home I realized just how bad it was and it was so dry. She did spray in light sheen or mist after finishing. I had to put a few drops of a little oil on my hands and rub through my hair. YES it rained that day, but I had my hair wrapped and tied really well with a scarf prior to leaving the shop. I did not get my hair wet at all or expose it to the moisture in the atmosphere and I definitely was not sweating. I drove straight home. I took it down immediately after getting home to re-wrap it tighter with hair pins, which the shop apparently did not have. Seems like they do other styles really well like finger coils, braids, twists and other natural hair styles. I know just how light, bouncy, and full of luster my 4c hair usually looks when flat-ironed by a professional. My hair was a BIG MISS, perhaps she does not straighten 4c hair well. A friend recommended the Natural Hair Studio since I was looking for a new location to get my hair braided. I went to check them out. It was so worth it! Sarah was my stylist and she did an excellent job. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she braided it just like the picture. She was on time for my appointment and made sure I was comfortable. I will be going back for another appointment and I will definitely recommend to my friends with natural hair.
