I went to curly hair studios and the experience was fun and their knowledge is extensive. I walked in with half curly, Matted, and Tangled hair that that I grew out. I’ve been trying to take care of myself and Summer ( Hair stylist ) took me step by step on how to take care of my hair and natural curls. I walked out looking fresh and nice all natural curly hair and on top of that the ladies in the shop were fun as well great conversation great experience.

I went here a couple days ago to try to have my beard trimmed because I was going to have some professional head shots taken for my business and this was the closest location to where my shoot was going to take place. I stood in the lobby or entryway for about 10 minutes before someone actually acknowledged that I was there. It was suggested that I might be more comfortable going to another shop down the street cuz it’s an all male barbershop. I was pretty shocked that this is something people say outside of movies.

I always thought my hair was just frizzy but straight-ish, and I damaged it like crazy, trying to de-frizz with straighteners at high heat. I stumbled upon Atoya’s Instagram in 2017. I heard her famous taglines, “frizz equals curls waiting to happen” and “your hair will feel like seaweed when properly conditioned and make this squishing sound” I went through her online video class, and it changed my hair life. I started seeing her that year, and she’s cut my hair every three months since (5 years!). I would not trust anyone else with my crazy hair (thin, delicate, 1A underneath, ringlets from the crown, and recovering from anemic alopecia). She is helpful, honest about what will work with your hair and the kindest person ever. The folks that work in her salon seem equally lovely and have all trained with her. I appreciate that she isn’t a Curly Girl Method fanatic but encourages folks to experiment and find what works for them! She gives hair-specific advice while you’re in the chair too! The salon also offers express cuts. Go this route to save some money and time! Get the full cut if you want curly coaching!

Love Atoya! She is just a beautiful soul and her work is art. She has in depth understanding of curly hair, but she is also able to customize it to the individual. My whole life my curly hair has been a difficult task. With Atoya, you learn to appreciate your hair and embrace the less is more mentality.

I found this place after googling the best curly haircuts in Portland. I just got my first dry cut for my curly hair and I’m very happy with the results. After the cut, I was unsure about the length of my face framing curls (I couldn’t decide if I wanted them shorter or not) and Summer was very considerate about it. She suggested that I could come back if I wanted it shorter. I realized that I did and she responded very quickly and gave me an appointment time. They are also doing a great job of keeping everything safe during covid. They sanitize the chairs after each use, have hand sanitizer available, wear masks, and limit the number of people in the store.

I had my first hair cut with Summer and really enjoyed my experience! She was very friendly and listened to all of my concerns about my hair. She was great about customizing the cut to fit my needs and hair goals, which I really appreciated. She provided a lot of helpful information to me in a way that was very digestible for someone first embarking on their hair journey. I would highly recommend this studio and Summer in particular!

Atoya is the BEST. I’ve been getting my hair cut by her for 5 years, and feel so lucky because she now is so busy she rarely takes on new clients. BUT she has her own studio and trains other stylists which are also fabulous. She makes you feel very safe during covid, including opening the door for you, wearing a mask 100% of the time, and not even touching your credit card directly. I am so glad I was able to visit her, please do not hesitate. My hair was never so magical until I met Atoya
