Founded in 2009 Smoak Salon has been a top fixture in Jackson’s Fondren District. Since opening, Smoak Salon has also been the home to quite a few celebrity hairstylists and makeup artists over the years. I have been enjoying services here for over a year, and the staff is always fantastic. Everyone is friendly and tells me hello. My stylist, Ben, is both talented and knowledgeable. He isn’t afraid to tell me “no” when I ask for something that will compromise the integrity of my hair, but instead, suggests safer alternatives to still get the look that I want. He also has no issue with the fact that I want to try new things constantly. We have been from waist to chin length and everything in between, including shaving half of it. I started with natural red-light brown color, to highlights, to “natural” platinum, to ash blonde, to rose gold, to violet, to pink and blue, and back to blonde.

Ben always comes in clutch when I need a new styling product during my appointment. He recommended “Johnny B Beard Balm” to replace the beard oil I had previously used. Now I’m not left trying to wash the oily oil off of my hands after use.

This was my first cut at S Moak, and I couldn’t be more pleased. Lauren was a great listener—in general but particularly when I was talking about my hair: what I liked, what I didn’t like, and what I thought I might like. Her reply to my collection of semi-coherent and slightly contradictory musings about my hair was a fantastic cut. She’s also a great teacher. When I had questions about the proper care and styling of curly hair, she responded with a wealth of information about products and techniques. Lauren seems to care a lot about what she does, and she’s great at it. I’m already looking forward to my return appointment.

Lauryn gave me legit the best gray coverage I’ve ever had done + beautiful balayage and a cut that was exactly what I wanted — even though I am wholly inarticulate about it. If I lived in Jackson (or even MS) I’d be here regularly. Also, she’s kind and sweet + didn’t try to force us to talk the entire 4 1/2 hours I was there. Big, big props.
