Established in 1971. Originally opened in 1971, in the heyday of gay liberation, Seagull Salon was named for Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach’s best-seller. It was the first unisex barber shop in NYC (if not the country). Over the years Seagull has changed hands several times, evolving from an idiosyncratic barber shop to a creative hair salon offering all kinds of color services as well as trend setting haircuts. Current Owners – Lead Stylist and freelance writer Shaun Surething and Johanna Fateman, Writer Musician and regular contributor to Artforum – acquired Seagull in the spring of 2006. Under their direction, Seagull caters to their New York community’s discerning cultural tastes including, but not limited to hair.

I was originally blonde and wanted to something new and Jenna at Seagull absolutely KILLED IT. I knew I wanted some sort of blue but she gave my hair life and dimension better than I ever thought it could be. I’m usually nervous about people coloring my hair because it’s so fine and thin, so small mistakes really show up, but she was completely professional and made my hair come out looking incredible. I 100% recommend Jenna for hair coloring and cuts, especially if you’re wanting to do something fun and aren’t totally sure where you want to go with it.

I have been going to Jenna for 4 years now and she is amazing!! Very great at listening to the design I have in mind and working with me to achieve it. She mastered a difficult asymmetrical cut that I had photos of and I was amazed at how perfectly she pulled it off. Also, Jenna is just a very chill person and lovely to be around… which I feel makes all the difference when you’re sitting in the chair for an hour or so. I don’t feel pressured to make small talk but her presence is so calming, grounding and chill. As a queer-identifying woman, I also appreciate having a stylist who is also queer-identifying, not just because I love supporting another queer artist, but also because we can speak the same language in terms of look, style and identity. I love that this salon feels like a very LGBTQIA+ celebrating space and would highly recommend a visit! ️ Oh, and the head massage she gives me when washing my hair is heaven. I honestly can’t wait for my next cut just for the head massage! ☺️
