I was very happy to find a Dominican Salon, near my house. It was my first time at Rafelina’s Beauty, it is a very clean place, they attend to me right away, I love that is by appointment so you won’t be waiting for a long time, the ladies were all very attentive, asking me if everything was ok. Rachel a very nice young lady did my hair, at first I was shocked she was blow drying my hair since she looks so young. But she did an amazing job, I am very happy and satisfied with her work and the attention of the other ladies. I recommend this place to anyone and will be going back again very soon. Thanks, ladies for your services.

This is my first time here and the experience was amazing. I couldn’t believe the passion and pride these girls had!! They did my hair with real TLC. I would definitely recommend this place to people and I 100% will be coming back thank you so much. Haircut

The place is super clean. The owner was courteous and pleasant. I called in advance to see if the place was busy. I explained all I wanted was a haircut. I waited 15 mins in the nice comfy chairs they have. The owner did the haircut. What good hands she has!! My hair responded accordingly. It’s nice, healthy, and shiny.

Critical: Professionalism, ValueI’ve come here several times before just to get a relaxer. I was satisfied with their services so I decided to try to get my hair colored. I called and booked the appointment specifically asking if they do bleach color. They said yes. I went in and because my hair is relaxed they refused to put bleach in it. Then they said it would come out with “some” color. They offered to do a strand test. Perfect! Then they asked me when was the last time I washed my hair I said about 3 weeks. Usually it’s 2 weeks but I waited because I wanted to get my hair colored. They then told me my hair was too dirty and the color wouldn’t STICK. I have been going to Dominican hair salons for eons and I’ve never heard of so many excuses not to do someone’s hair. They said they didn’t want any liability in case they messed it up but how are you in business doing POC hair (black & latinas) if you can’t bleach hair that has been relaxed? I’ve literally been doing it for years elsewhere but I moved last year. Unbelievable! Brought my own products. Still the lady doing my hair added some of her products smh. Really rough when combing my hair through during the wash and after. Feel like a lot of my hair was being pulled out because of it. Missed a lot of spots while washing my hair so scalp was not as clean as expected. Didn’t use heat protectant on my hair when blowing. At the end my hair did look nice but not sure if I’ll be returning to this place. Not completely satisfied.

Had my hair done here a number of times. They are just okay. 2 stars only because last time I went the girl wouldn’t let me use a single drop of thermal protecting serum in my hair before she blew out and straightened. She told me she “didn’t recommend it” and that all I needed to do to protect my hair was cut it. (What does that even mean???) As a result when I left my hair was drier than straw and did not feel smooth at all. What’s worse is she missed an entire section of my hair when straightening. She definitely made the few split ends I had massively worse. I paid, tipped and then had to go home and redo my hair myself. Disappointing and easily could have been avoided if she would have just listened to me. After all, I’ve been loving with my hair for 33 years, so I do know a little bit about what works for it.

I used to go here for years! Even when Rafaelina was at the other salon down the street by the diner. However, I’ve noticed the lack of service and their respect for black women/women with short hair. Me and my mom have been going to her for over a decade and unfortunately my mother had cancer and lost her hair. The people at the salon would always compliment us on our hair and the texture because it is curly but “manageable.” Once my mother’s hair started growing back, she went to Rafaelina to get a hair cut and the employees made my mom feel uncomfortable and unwanted. It’s a shame that because my mom lost her beautiful long hair, that they treated her differently. I understand it is part of the Dominican culture to discriminate against Black people, but for a salon that we used to love to treat anyone differently based on their skin color, hair length or texture is unacceptable. I’ve even had friends say that they’ve experienced this as well. Needless to say, we will not be returning and do not recommend anyone to unless you’re open to being ridiculed and receive poor service depending on your hair length, texture or skin color.

They are honestly fabulous! They take their time and listen to the customer’s concern. I have natural hair, and they did a wonderful job with respecting my needs.

Horrible experience. Was told to go home and detangle my hair if I wanted it done there. I was told that my hair was matted and was asked if my hair had been braided. The last time that my hair was braided was in September. I told her that my hair had conditioner in it and if it was wet that it would detangle more easily. The Girl refused to wet my hair or even attempt to detangle. She just kept pulling at it and making negative comments. Rafaelina didnt attempt to help or touch my hair either. She just spoke in Spanish to the other girl and said “Sorry” as I left. If this was 10 years ago I probably would’ve cried on my way out. I’m a bit older and wiser now so I was able to just respectfully put my jacket on and leave with my head high. I have been natural for almost 6 years and that is something that I’m very proud of. I wont let anyones ignorance and/or lack of education on how to handle or treat natural hair discourage me. The treatment that I receieved today is exactly why I dont go to Dominican Salons. I will never go back there again and I dont recommend that any other women of color with textured or natural hair go there either. That is not how a fellow woman of color should run a hair salon or treat other fellow women of color. Just because us natural women decide to opt out of chemically treating and damaging our hair to make it easier and “nice” for the “hair stylist” doesnt make it okay to be treated the way that I was today. Surprisingly the woman on the the next block over at Alex’s Beauty Salon did a wonderful job straightening and trimming my hair. Mind you it is a Dominican salon as well ,but two of the stylists have natural hair and know what they’re doing! So if you’re in a pinch definitely go there if you’re a natural like me!
