Modern Classic is a private custom tattoo shop conveniently located in Boulder’s University Hill District just steps away from the CU-Boulder campus. We have been professionally tattooing in Boulder for over 20 years and On The Hill for almost 15 of those years. I spent 12+ years as the resident artist at Tribal Rites’ Boulder location as an artist, manager, problem-solver and general shop cheerleader. After many years of changes, I needed a change myself & when I found this hidden gem that was literally just a couple hundred feet from my long-time station at Tribal Rites, I decided to try out just managing just myself and my own space again. The work here is mainly by appointment but we do walk-ins when available. That’s the scoop.

Carlos has done two tattoos for me, and they’re both exactly what I wanted. The first was lilacs, based on a picture of the last lilacs from my grandmother’s property, which was also a cover-up of another tattoo. We worked together extensively beforehand to make sure he knew exactly what I wanted. He understood the emotional nature of the tattoo, and since I knew he was best Boulder artist at tattooing flora, I waited for him.

Carlos is a true artist. I came to him with a partial idea but nothing exact, and he worked with me extensively to find the perfect tattoo which is absolutely stunning. It was a meaningful tattoo to me about a very rare disorder, and when I came back for my official appointment he’d done research on it and really cared. I love working with Carlos. He’s a such a kind soul and puts so much time and effort into his craft. He looks after his customers. When I came in with my friend for a tattoo he made sure that we were all comfortable with the design and placement we had mind. He patiently worked with us and had many laughs.
