Amniotic Tissue Injections:
Amniotic tissue is comprised of the umbilical cord and membrane separating a baby from the mother’s womb. The umbilical cord and placenta are donated after delivery and the healthy tissue is collected. Amniotic tissue contains high levels of growth factors and other cell types that are vital to healing injuries and is also immunenaïve, which means that there is no concern for the body to reject it, such as with blood transfusions or organ transplants. When amniotic tissue is introduced to the injury, the growth factors within the tissue go to work healing the affected area. For more information about amniotic tissue injections, call 609- 904-2565.
Concussion Management
A concussion is typically caused by a traumatic injury or blow to the head that alters your brain’s normal function. Although, the effects are temporary, you could experience symptoms like memory loss, headaches, an inability to concentrate, and/or a lack of coordination and balance. A blow to the head can disrupt the normal function of the brain. We help to diagnose the sometimes subtle symptoms and guide you through safe and effective concussion recovery.
Evaluation & Treatment of Aches, Strains, Sprains, Tendonitis
If you have recently been experiencing aches and pains that won’t seem to go away, it might be time to call a specialist. Here at Jersey Shore Sports Medicine, we will take a look at your strain and tension and determine the proper diagnosis. Delays in diagnosis of these ailments can lead to poor healing, reduced range of motion and long-term disability. We pinpoint the precise location of your pain and prescribe a regimen that will get you back to your normal activities. Medical Weight Loss
If you’re tired of hearing about the latest diet fad and you’ve been struggling with weight loss, a medical weight loss program might be right for you. Dr. Sokalsky caters this program to the individual patient, examining the underlying medical issues that may be leading to weight gain. Starting with a panel of blood work, he addresses underlying hormonal imbalances and other potential weight gain triggers. Then he works with you to create a comprehensive program that includes diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and medication, if necessary
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a safe and painless diagnostic tool that produces images using sound waves. During an ultrasound scan, a probe produces sound waves that go through the gel and then into the body. Once the probe has collected the sounds that bounce back, an image appears on the screen. Here at Jersey Shore Sports Medicine we prefer to use this kind of procedure to produce images of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, bones and soft tissue.
Orthotics & Braces
An orthotic device is essentially a brace. These tools do more than ensure immobility and protection – they are actually complex devices used to target a person’s specific injury or physical condition. Such custom devices help to establish normal patterns of motion, while protecting against injuries. Here at Jersey Shore Sports Medicine we will choose the appropriate materials and fit the brace based on the adult or child’s structural and functional needs.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection
In this procedure, blood is drawn from the patient and spun down so that the platelets are concentrated. Then it is injected into the injured area. Platelets contain growth factors that help to heal injuries. Those growth factors go to work in the injured area.
Platelet Rich Plasma Injections (PRP)
Platelets contain numerous growth factors that help to repair injured tissue. In PRP Injections, the patient’s blood is drawn, spun down, and separated in a centrifuge, concentrating the platelets and creating plasma that is rich with healing properties. This platelet-rich plasma is then injected into and around the affected area. By introducing platelet rich plasma to the damaged area, the body is tricked into believing that the chronic injury is new and a fresh wave of healing begins. Prolotherapy
Inflammation is the body’s natural way of healing an injury. When an injury doesn’t fully heal, there is chronic damage without inflammation. Prolotherapy essentially tricks the body into repeating a new wave of healing. It works by injecting an irritating substance, such as dextrose or sugar water, into an injured structure to stimulate a healing response. The substance is often mixed with lidocaine and sodium morrhuate (cod liver oil extract). Common injuries treated with prolotherapy include chronic tendinosis (such as tennis elbow) and chronic low back pain.
Sports Physicals (Pre-Participation)
Sports participation is a great way to stay fit and socialize. Regardless of your age, you’ll want to be sure that you are physically ready for the intensities the sport might entail. Sports physicals, also known as pre-participation physical examinations, are an important element of safe participation in organized sports. The sports physical ensures you are in playing shape and helps determine whether or not it is safe for you to participate in a particular sport.
Steroid Injections
When you suffer a sprain, break a bone or cut yourself, you will notice redness around the wound or injury. This kind of inflammation occurs when the body is trying to protect the area against foreign substances such as bacteria or viruses. However, inflammation can cause pain, swelling and other problems. An injection of corticosteroids can help. It has fewer side effects than steroids in pill form and can provide relief for up to a month or longer.
Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Stem Cell Injections:
Stem cells in the body have the ability to transform into different types of tissue, such as tendons and ligaments. Introducing them into an injured area allows for healing of the damaged tissue, including cartilage. Umbilical cord blood and the surrounding tissue are an excellent source these of healthy, highly concentrated cells. Similar to amniotic tissue injections, there is no concern for rejection. Viscosupplementation Injections
This is a synthetic joint fluid that is used to treat knee arthritis. Colloquially, these injections are sometimes known as “gel shots,” “chicken shots,” or “rooster shots” because of the product’s origin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring acid that is located in your joints. This substance helps absorb motions, like running, walking, sprinting, jumping etc. Patients with arthritis in the knee, for example, have a very low level of Hyaluronic acid, increasing the pain and the likelihood of joint, bone and cartilage damage. Viscosupplementation injections are intended to help return some of the mobility and function to the affected joints.
