As a natural I have been doing my own hair but I have been looking for a salon that knows what to do with my hair. I loved my experience at Cole Stevens Salon. I felt welcomed and acknowledged upon entry. I was given a coat and taken to begin my hair in no more than 15 min.

First experience with this salon was back in February, I booked a curly cut. They check you in, check your temp and give you a smock. My stylist wasn’t in at the moment, so had to wait an additional 20 min prior to being taken care of. Things happen, so I brushed it off. The salon is very spa like, very relaxing environment which I loved. I was shampoo’d then my hair was cut and styled, my hair was styled with mousse and for my hair type, mousse just doesn’t work, but I knew I’d end up going home and styling it myself again as this has been my experience most times when I go to a salon and receive a curly cut. Once I went home and styled it, I loved the shape of my cut, so I was generally satisfied. I attempted to schedule an appt in April for color services which resulted in a lot of back and forth phone calls between myself and the receptionist to confirm all the details of my appt, to ultimately result in me being told there was actually no available appt at all. Weird. Fast forward to my most recent appt, booked a curly cut/flat twist/hydration treatment. I get to the bowl after waiting 30 min and am asked if it’s ok to blow dry my hair straight, for a curly cut?? Fast forward my hair is blow dried, then cut, mind you the first time I received a “curly” cut by this stylist it was done wet, guess she wanted to save time. I ended up being charged way more than expected for this simple blow dry. Went home and the next day remove my flat twist and realized she had placed rubber bands in the middle of each flat twist, which were a nightmare to take off. I wish she would have asked me first. I think if you’re a “straight” natural this salon is for you. If you’re requesting your hair to be styled in its natural state good luck, does not seem to be their niche, atleast at the greenbelt location. Most of the natural hair women at this salon I noticed were receiving silk press treatments and I guess that’s for a reason.

I had an appointment with Renée today, at least I thought I did until she informed me she is really book and she won’t be done with my hair in the average time of 2hours, so she pass me off to Nelly who was nice however I don’t think was into hair care as she tried to use excessive heat. If you going to recommend someone explain there background or refer to the owner someone who specializes in natural hair care. My hair does not need a lot of heat after it blown out, but she still tried to apply more to it. The administrative staff not so good as communication was minimal. I won’t be going back. Thanks Nelly for doing my hair in such short notice.

Critical: Professionalism, Quality, ValueAvoid this place altogether, NELLY gave me HEAT DAMAGE and there is no point in paying to have your hair damaged by people that are supposed to be professionals. I literally just came in for a trim and now have a different curl pattern, you are better off doing your hair at home. Avoid this place altogether, NELLY gave me HEAT DAMAGE and there is no point in paying to have your hair damaged by people that are supposed to be professionals. I literally just came in for a trim and now have a different curl pattern, you are better off doing your hair at home. Also to my knowledge nothing has been done about Nelly giving me heat damage, so makes me question if other stylists there are as reckless and the salon doesn’t care.

I’ll start by saying that anybody who spends any time in this salon can immediately see that all of the stylists are super talented. In my opinion that’s not up for debate, which is why they get the three stars. However, the service aspect leaves a bit to be desired. I made an appointment with a stylist online. I received a call to reschedule. Annoying, but no big deal. Things happen. I get another call before my rescheduled appointment to reschedule again. Again, I’m annoyed because I’ve already been rescheduled once and the rescheduled time is what was recommended to me, but I go ahead and reschedule again. When I arrive for my appointment I learn that the stylist I’m booked with does not do the style I booked. How does that even happen?? Why was she even an option for this particular style on the website and why didn’t she know what style I booked before I arrived?? After some back and forth she found another stylist, Patricia, who could fit me in between her clients. I was actually looking to book with Patricia online, but she wasn’t available on the website. I just figured she was booked, but who knows. The original stylist attempted to tell me what I should do when booking next time as if this mixup was somehow my fault. NO. They need to fix their website and the stylists need to know what the clients are expecting to have done beforehand. If she can have someone call to reschedule me she could have called IN ADVANCE to say sorry, there’s been a mix up, I don’t do this style, let me get you booked with someone else. END OF STORY.

Cole Stevens Salon combines a modern chic style and a calm and relaxing ambiance with personable and professional staff who are highly talented in the care of natural hair. I recently had a Wednesday morning appointment at the salon. It was a very good experience – a very good day. I was greeted immediately and my consultation with Diane (the owner) began shortly after my arrival. I knew I wanted a tapered style, but I decided to just trust Diane to give me a cut that would flatter my face. I’m happy to say, I love my new, tapered cut by Diane and I appreciated the helpful tips she offered regarding styling my hair. The shampoo and conditioning service provided by Olga was top notch also. A good natural hair salon can be hard to find. I think Cole Stevens Salon in Greenbelt is Maryland’s best.
