Naptural Thoughts
I’ve been natural for 7+ years. My usual stylist (in Hicksville) didn’t have availability for a sick press and I wanted it done fresh before a wedding event. I want to point out that I’ve had a silk press on my natural hair in the past with it having no problem reverting back to its natural kinky state. I called asking if they could do a silk press on natural hair and was told yes. Their hours were perfect for me after work. I was a little concerned about going to a Dominican salon because I know Dominican salons usually use a lot of heat but figured worse case scenario with a little extra love and few good protein treatments my hair would be ok within a few washes (after the silk press). Everyone was very nice in the salon. I received my wash, deep conditioner, then a blow dry and trim; this was my silk press service. About 2 weeks after my appointment I noticed my hair was excessively shedding. Any time I ran my fingers through it there was SOOOO much hair left in my hands. This was especially alarming because my natural hair had been so healthy. When I washed it my hair was coming out in CHUNKS! LONG CHUNKS! It wouldn’t stop. And it was still so straight. Straight in the shower fully wet. Straight as it air dried. I didn’t have to apply any heat for drying because it was still so straight. I couldn’t understand how my natural kinky fro was gone. I washed it again a week later and it was the same thing. My natural hair was thinning and straight after my “silk press”. I went to see a natural hair stylist and she’s convinced some sort of relaxer or chemical straighter was applied in my hair because my natural texture is gone. I had to have her cut the super straight ends off and start over. I’m heartbroken. Years of hair care and work gone just like that. I do not recommend this salon to women with natural “kinky” hair that want to keep their texture.
