Ama, the Cherokee word for water, is a sacred element, intricately flowing in and out of the Appalachian way of life. The Cherokee Indians have a daily ritual called “going to water”,, submerging themselves in the river to wash away physical and spiritual ailments. Water is revered for its strength, vitality and wisdom. In return, it provides hydration, food, navigation and holistic healing. Ama Spa’s treatments are cultivated to embrace water as a source of life to preserve the mind, body and spirit for whole well-being.

The massage itself was done well! And the lobby is pretty. Those are really the only two positives, which is why the rating got one star. Here are the negatives: the people weren’t very friendly… at all. Almost acted annoyed that I was there. When I got to the locker room, there were seven dirty glasses / cups on the one small counter top in the entire space. I thought maybe a party had just left and gave them a bit of grace. When I came back after two hours, all the dirty glasses were still there taking up space all over the counter. There was only one clean robe in the locker room when I walked in and a mound of about 15 dirty robes overflowing out of the basket. There were no clean sandals. There were paper towels sprawled on the counter. Very very messy locker room, that was clearly not checked on before I got there or the two hours that I was getting a service done. On top of all of that… My 90 minute massage was $195. I’m OK with that cost. But then when I checked out there was a $43 “service fee” tacked onto my total cost. I asked if that was the tip, given it was about 20% of my service cost. The person checking me out seemed kind of annoyed that I asked and informed me that no, it was not a tip. That service fee is how they pay their massage therapists and a small portion of that also goes to their laundry cost. I said, “so it does go to your therapists?” She said “yes, but it’s not the tip. It’s how we pay them for their job. So you need to leave a tip on top of that.” So my service was $195… then I was charged an additional $43… then I left another $40 tip. So my one massage there ended up costing close to $300…. For a messy locker room and relatively rude employees.

The Ama Spa is small but mighty! If you’re thinking you want a large expansive spa to have a relaxing and luxurious experience, think again! The Ama layout is intimate and cozy but not at all plain or lacking in any way.

My husband gifted me a $500 spa certificate. The actual treatments I got done were great (90 min signature massage and the 60 min signature facial)- I had the same person for both and she was kind and helpful. The problem I had is the $86 service fee BEFORE tip.

The massage itself was incredible, tiffanie did a great job and i was happy to tip her plenty. My issue is charging a $30 “service fee” on top of the price. It’s really bizarre and feels sneaky. Why not just add to the cost of service? I honestly was considering being a member but after thinking about it more I don’t feel great rewarding weird business practices like this that convolute prices instead of being upfront on what the actual service cost. It’s scammy and low brow which feels odd for a place that seems to want to be more upscale.

Incredibly overpriced. My wife and I had a couples massage here and it was over $400 for a 60 minute, and the massage was average. People and atmosphere were nice but no need to charge like it’s a world class spa!
