My stylist was very nice, attentive and went above and beyond to satisfy my (hair) needs. The owner and some of the other stylists seemed to follow the owner’s lead: If you’re not there to see “Them”–they ignore you. I am mixed race with natural, curly hair… They didn’t even greet me when I walked through the door for a third beauty appointment. During what should have been a relaxing treat for me; I saw them from the mirror giving one another weird faces, peeking over to me as my curls were styled into place. What are we—twelve? I knew that they were going to be “trashing” me before I hit the parking lot. My stylist is very sweet and it’s a shame she works with such ignorant people. The atmosphere was so intense and negative I declined to finish my treatment of brow/lip waxing and will not be making a fourth appointment. Cookeville is growing and is a main hub in the Upper Cumberland region. It has Tennessee Tech University with a population that is becoming more and more geographically and racially diverse every year of a new college term. I will be going to the Aura Salon from now on. The rate is a little higher, but you can’t dismiss being treated with decency, professionalism, friendliness and respect.

I came here for a simple haircut. I pretty much get the same haircut once a year at the beginning of summer. Never had a bad haircut. I was having a hard time getting an appointment with my regular stylist/salon of 5 years. I was able to get an appointment the following day with what I now know is a brand new stylist. I asked for about 2-3” off the length and the layers trimmed up. My hair was about 16-18” long. He proceeded to use a razor to trim my hair. At that time I was not too concerned, even though I’d never had anyone use a razor instead of scissors. He kept cutting and cutting and I assumed he was evening it up since I was not able to see due to the mirror not being level. All of a sudden, he goes to another stylist, who wasn’t paying any attention whatsoever, and says “I can’t get it to lay right.” She comes over, looks at it and says “looks fine”, goes back to the opposite side to continue talking with a co-worker. At this point, my hair is almost dry and looks like I had been electrocuted. It was raining so I chalked it up to the humidity. He just basically gave up and styled my hair. I will say, he did very well with the styling part, all things considered. I could just barely see the back of my hair in the unlevel mirror, but I DID ask him why it looked like a chunk was missing in the back on one side. My hair did not feel right at all. I just wanted to get home and see for myself. Later, I see that he has razor cut the bottom layer all the way up to about 1” from my scalp and it’s so tapered I only have some scraggly hairs left. My entire bottom layer is now gone and the tapered ends are frizzy and damaged. If you’ve just had 8+ inches cut off your perfectly healthy hair, it should not have split frizzy ends, it should feel amazing! I tried and tried to work with it a couple of days. I finally sent them a message with tons of pictures to their business profile on Facebook. At 1am Sunday morning, someone responds and implies that I don’t know how to style my own hair and that “they aren’t psychic”. If they were answering Facebook messages 24/7, why did I have to wait 3 days for them to address my concerns? I waited days for them to contact me. I ended up having to get someone at another salon to fix it to something that at least looks normal. I am not going to throw the fresh-out-of-school young stylist under the bus because he should have been supervised and he DID ask for assistance. I have to wait months to correct the cut and have healthy hair again. I also had to purchase a bottle of Olaplex #3 to try to keep the razored ends from splitting any further, and that stuff is not cheap. No matter how desperate you are during this quarantine situation, just wait. Go somewhere, anywhere else. I am attaching before and after pictures. I believe I have styled my hair decent all these years? My mother was a hairdresser and I style my friends’ and my daughter’s hair all the time. I color my own hair as well and I don’t think it looks too hideous? What could have possibly been a “happy compromise”? “…exactly what I wanted?” I didn’t want a razor cut with gaps and thinned-out damaged hair, you don’t have to be “psychic” to know that no normal person would ask for that. I am not a vain person at all. You just don’t mess around with a girl’s hair, no matter who they are or what they look like when they walk in the door. I believe any respectable business would have made things right by at least giving me a refund. But, I didn’t even deserve a return call or follow-up message. Nothing.

Catie Thompson is the worst hair stylist u can get a haircut from. She always ask for a tip whenever she does a terrible job and barely trims any hair. Then on top of that she cuts it way to short whenever u ask for it a longer because she does whatever she thinks is better for you even though that is not what u asked for.
